THE WORD "VIETNAM"
In honor of all from northeast Mississippi who sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War

If you say the word “Pearl Harbor” to most people, their minds are filled with images of burning U.S. Navy ships. If you say the word “Hitler”, they think of the face of the enemy, a villain responsible for the deaths of millions.  If you say the word “D-Day”, people’s thoughts go towards the courage and determination showed by American soldiers in World War II’s most pivotal moment. If you say any of these words, it always comes back to pride and honor in the victory that America won. What started with the pain of Pearl Harbor ended with parades down Broadway.

For the soldiers who fought in World War II, there have been decades of gratitude. They have been dubbed “the greatest generation”. Movies like Saving Private Ryan honored their service and kept the story alive for even the youngest American.

But if you say the word “Vietnam”, people aren’t sure what to think. The pride that is so present with World War II is lacking in the war that took place twenty years later. There was no moment like Pearl Harbor to galvanize the country. There was no point like D-Day where the outcome hung in the balance. People aren’t sure if we won or if we lost. They aren’t even sure who we fought. They can’t name the battles or count the victories. For the most part, all they can remember is the turmoil of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

For the soldiers who fought this war situated in a decade of dissidence, the welcome they received paled in comparison to the veterans of World War II. There were no parades, no celebrations. The movies made about their experience were mostly against the war, painting their service in a skeptical light. But for all of the confusion that surrounds the word “Vietnam”, there is still one thing that is crystal clear – the sacrifices of soldiers in Vietnam were just as real and just as valuable as the sacrifices of soldiers in World War II.

This week, in the pages of the Journal and at 40 Days of Honor, we will pay tribute to soldiers from north Mississippi who served in Vietnam. Some of them died in the jungle. Some of them came home. All of them sacrificed a great deal. Today, at www.40DaysofHonor.com, you will find the names of north Mississippians who gave their lives in Vietnam. If you know their story, please let us know. We want to say “Thank you”.
